Shelter closing in Putnam County : a cry for help

Shelter closing in Putnam County : a cry for help

You came to the orientation today, you already know this information. For everyone else, I thought it best to explain the information completely.

You may have heard the rumors that the Humane Society of Putnam County will be closing. These rumors are true. We have struggled financially for months, and we simply cannot remain open any longer. The entire board is devastated, and it was an extremely emotional decision, but one that became absolutely necessary The shelter will remain open until September 30th. After that, any animals remaining will have to be euthanized. Again, this was not a decision that we reached lightly, but there were no other options.

The staff and many board members are working diligently to find new homes for the animals at the shelter. If any of you know anyone who has been considering getting a cat or dog, please tell them about us because now is the time to act. Our adoption rates are going to be extremely flexible, so I encourage them to contact the shelter. We will be open to the public Tuesday and Saturday from 12-5. Volunteers will permitted everyday from 9-3, and 9-5 on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

We still very much need volunteers to help us close out the month. Our finances are already grim. Any costs that can be cut by having more volunteers and less staff will help. The orientation session next Saturday will still happen.

Although the shelter is closing, the store will remain open. Those proceeds will go toward paying off any debt incurred during the past few months. After those debts have been paid, the money will go to other local animals assistance programs. If we can save enough, the shelter could potentially reopen.

Thank you for all that you’ve done so far and your continued support. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,

Casie Sambo

Secretary and Co-Coordinator HSPC
